My artwork is a pencil drawing of a smiling child with long white hair, surrounded by rays of alternating light and dark and facing a dark-haired person. The smiling child wears a diadem with a single gemstone, and is caught in a candid moment of joy. These two characters are recurring ones throughout my creative projects, backed by a story that I’ve begun to try and communicate with this piece. The specific moment I’m portraying is one in which the usually stoic child breaks into a youthful grin, an expression of joy that crashes through his stony exterior when speaking with his friend.
I used pencil for the entire piece, utilizing techniques like hatching, cross hatching, and blending to add texture and depth to the scene. I used one pencil for most of it, and the darkest parts were drawn with a much softer lead.
This artwork was entirely inspired by my own imagination and characters. It is a tiny piece of a story which has been floating around my head for years, and which I have decided to finally try and put on paper. I wanted to express a sense of purity and childish joy with this drawing, as well as an emphasis on the exceptionality and mundanity of the moment.
